Being a Girl, Being Modern

INTERNATIONAL, TRENDS

Sati of the 80s used to be at her work before the dawn breaks over her valley and at bed before the clock strikes ten. She looked astonishingly charming while draped in Saree. Her heart was at home and her world was limited within many faces which she loved, cared and treasured for the whole of life with smile and undisclosed pains.

Cut to the 20th century when Sati took a new avatar. Quite contrary to her earlier beliefs, she now thinks the home is not the end of the world. Today, she is passionate about life, modern about her surrounding and enthusiastic about the unknown and undone. She is open now, with ‘more’ being the motto. Now, she is Shalley. Our very own Shalley, who is smarter than ever.

Nothing is wrong. It’s good that she is becoming broadminded, modern and of course beautifully western. But is her ‘open’ attitude earning her troubles and clouding her mentalities? Here’s a look at the other side of her modern life style taking in point her much-loved partying and outing nature.

Security: Indian Shalleys today frequent the discos, pubs and night clubs. They get plenty of fun in and around, but also hit the headlines of dailies more often. The incident of violence and hostility happened to Shalleys in night clubs or while coming from any party are abundant. Sometimes their drunken nature finds them the trouble and sometimes they unwillingly and unfortunately get trapped.

Health Hazards: Shalleys today anticipate a slim and trim figure that steals the eyes. But their increasing interest in staying out of the home and growing affinity towards bad beverages actually affecting their health a lot. When Shalley has to play so many roles in her life, she is just getting weaker with weaknesses to so many things.

Family breakups: Many married Shalleys like to club in societies or still love their old pubs. They have a different perspective of partying. Staying out and partying late night is a status sign they believe in. But the inconsistencies are leading to family breakups. Cases of divorce and extra marital affairs are on the rise every night.

Dressing the way: Dressing is a sense which some Shalleys describe in western style. They like going out and partying like the Hollywood way.  Saree today is less romantic compared to something that puts it up. Pardon me. That’s not the case in all the Shalleys. Still, those who make it up mocks at the established set of rules which we, as proud Indians, pride in. Isn’t it?

Getting that nuclear
: The rapidly becoming western Shalleys many times end it to a nuclear family. They may live in a densely populated urban neighborhood, but their ideal concept of ‘home’ nestles around the faces which matter the most. They are getting nuclear with ‘no’ to everyone who is a burden.

The above are just a few of the many effects of ‘getting modern’ or ‘becoming western’ on many Shalleys today. However, not all Shalleys are alike. Many of them have not forgotten their earlier avatar and are nicely playing their roles in life without getting into the complexities. Now, those who are held guilty here shouldn’t be blamed alone. The male dominating society also has a major contribution in showing the Shalleys or even Satis, the other way. What’s your take?
