The scintillating 2010 Grammy awards were broadcasted live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles and attracted the largest Grammy audience since 2004. A whooping 25.8 million viewers tuned in with their eyes peeled! The timing of this audience record couldn’t have been better as A.R Rahman picked up not one but two golden beauties in front of millions of people (literally!) India stood out that night.
Rahman picked up his first award for ‘Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media’– ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. It is important to see the brilliant nominees he was pitched against – Cadillac Records, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, True Blood and Twilight. He picked up his second award for Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media – ‘Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire.’ This win too was heightened in the presence of esteemed nominees – All Is Love from Where the Wild Things Are (Karen O & the Kids), Decode from Twilight (Paramore), Once in a Lifetime from Cadillac Records (Beyonce), and The Wrestler from The Wrestler (Bruce Springsteen)
There was, of course other exhilarating happenings at the Grammy’s like Lady Ga Ga’s crazy-as-heck outfit and Beyonce’s record. Ga-Ga showed up in silver orbit type dress – complete with a pointy star and yellow hair. Beyonce on the other hand, set a new Grammy record for most wins by a female artist in one night. The previous record incidentally also belongs to her for winning five honors in just one night! Taylor swift was the surprise package, winning four Grammy’s! She too set a record of her own, now that she is the youngest artist in Grammys history to win the award for the year’s best album.
There were some memorable performances too - Four-time Grammy winner Roberta Flack with five-time Grammy winner Elton John, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Carrie Underwood, and Usher in a special 3-D Grammy tribute to Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, The Dave Matthews Band, Pink, Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli in a special fund-raising segment for Haitian relief and many other fantastic performers covering three and a half hours of undiluted entertainment.
