The Hot Dog Festival is an annual ritual at
the All American Diner and every year it just keeps getting bigger and better. This year marks the
10th Annual Hot Dog Festival and this year the Diner brings a whole new variety.
As a breakfast lover,
the All American Diner at
India Habitat Centre is one of my favourite stops for early morning made-to-order eggs and juice. But this was my first time at the Hot Dog Festival and with all the reviews I have heard, I was really looking forward to it!
The Festival has 11 specially-crafted Hot Dogs for you to savour. You can order your buns with sausages made of pork or veal/beef or replace them with chicken. Cottage Cheese comes to rescue for the vegetarians, who can pick from the two Hot Dogs available. Hot Dogs are not at all about the vegetarians so credits to them to at least include something for the veggie-eater. Though they could have brought in some variety with the soy protein and tofu.
We ordered the Hot Dog sampler - four varieties of Hot Dogs (in smaller size) in a wicker basket and the only two vegetarian Hot Dogs on the menu - Blackened Cottage Cheese Dog and Spicy Cottage Cheese & Salsa Dog. The sampler was wicked and at Rs. 460 - it was quite a steal. The Hot Dogs you could try in the sampler were the Hollywood Dog, Hawaiian Dog, Reuben Dog and Chubb's Dog. Also served along are some nicely done potato wedges that you should't miss. My friend tasted the Sampler, while I polished off the vegetarian Hot Dogs.
The Reuben Hot Dog was done with the emmentaler cheese and finished off with spiced mayo - wholesome, delicious. Hawaiian was unimpressive. The tastes were great with sweet onion relish and sausage but the croissant style bun stood no chance against the soft hot dog bun used for other hot dogs. Probably, if the same was done in the plain bun, it would have stole our hearts! The Hollywood Hot Dog was a star - simply done with plain bun, melted cheese, sausage and caramelized onions. The Chubb's was the best of the lot - spicy fries, cheese and chill totally worked.
Of course, any meat-eater would dismiss vegetarian Hot Dogs even without trying but I quite liked the Blackened Cottage Cheese Dog (Rs. 245) and so did my friend who very seldom eats vegetarian. The soft bun, spicy cajun and Cottage Cheese were all good together. The other vegetarian Hot Dog on the menu, Spicy Cottage Cheese and Salsa Dog (Rs. 245), was the vegetarian counterpart of the Hawaiian Hot Dog and still unimpressive for the same reasons - the croissant-like bun. Though, we both quite liked the relish it came with.
Either way, the Hot Dog Festival at All American Diner is totally recommended. All the buns are moderately priced, and are super filling. Order along some yummy shakes or smoothies from the regular menu, squirt the mustard, pour the ketchup, and dig into the Hot Hot Dogs!
