I had spotted Watermelon twice before at my quick visits to Khan Market
but it was not before my friend invited me for lunch that I actually
got a chance to experience it. As I entered the place, I instantly fell
in love with the creativity it is done up with. The decor of Watermelon
is based completely on the colours and nature of the fruit. There are three different spaces
to sit and dine at. The area that you enter to sports a light wallpaper
with perfectly soft lighting. The tables are carved of light wood and
have a fun green glass on top. Half the seating is stuck to the wall
and sports a very funky cover with different coloured circles and
rounds. The other part of the seating is bright red chairs. The other
area indoors is the lounge area with a really funky bright red
wall and a false green wall covering half of that. The green slabs on
this wall showcase the hookah and very little decoration. The indoors
are done up really well with colours and soft lighting at all the right
place. Definitely soothing. My favourite place to sit and eat at
Watermelon was, however, the outdoors. I like how there's a
nice roof to the outdoors also which makes it ideal with an evening of
light drizzle too. The decor here is very contemporary and I especially
loved the ceiling light and reckon that they must be superb at
evenings.
Getting to food, Watermelon at Khan Market has a great choice of menu and apparently, it's mostly healthy.
They only use Olive Oil in cooking and they ensure you take in the
least calories possible with such great taste! I started with Watermelon Mojito
- their signature drink. It had amazing chunks of fresh watermelon and
though I am not generally a Mojito fan, I did enjoy the mix of mint and
watermelon. The mint flavours weren't overpowering my drink and that I
think, worked well for me. There are many other mocktails on the menu that seemed tempting like the Litchi Paradise, the Refresher or the Sunshine. For appetizers, my friend and I ordered the Asparagus and Goat Cheese Blinesse.
A lot of cheese in any one dish is not something I particularly like but this
one was divine and I'm not even exaggerating. I could go back to
Watermelon just to have more of these bags with Asparagus and Goat
Cheese. The salts and flavours were done well and I had already made up
my mind about Watermelon that moment. I would, however, advice that you
pick a Salad from the menu. Believing their commitment to
healthy food and eating, the salads must be done well too. There are
plenty of options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. To beat the
winter cold in Delhi, you could pair up your salad with a warm soup. For vegans, there's mock chicken
essentially made of Soya and Wheat that tastes exactly like Chicken.
Mock meat is apparently healthy too and you find a little trivia about
it on the first page of the menu. They also have sandwiches on the menu and when I spotted the California Veggie Sandwich and the American Bagel Sandwich,
I wished to come to Watermelon for breakfast! I am really hoping they
do add some more breakfast fare and kick start with a breakfast-special
menu on early mornings!
After we enjoyed our appetizers, we sipped some fresh juice and read through the main course available. I honestly wasn't very attracted to the Pizzas on the menu, maybe because there was a lot of other dishes that I could give try to here. I also skipped the Pasta which happens to be my regular order at such cafes and restaurants just so I could try something new here. The crepes on the menu seemed pretty tempting too, but I instead picked the Bamya
- Grilled vegetables served over Parsley Brown Rice with Okra. We also
ordered Mezze Platter and enjoyed that with the main course. The Mezze Platter,
unlike at most other places which serve only hummus, was served with
three different sauces Hummus, Baba Ganoush and Tahini Sauce. Try the
Mezze platter as starters with one of the mocktails on the menu. It
should go well together. Guilty, but the desserts seemed a must after a
hearty meal. There's not an elaborate desserts section in the menu but
they are well choosen. If you have a weakness for chocolates - try the Chocolate Mousse. Almo Choco Cake and Chocolate Brownie with Ice Cream are the other choices for chocolate lovers. The Frosted Lemon Slice
is done well too. If you're too confused, just order the platter of
yogurt ice cream and you should be good to go. And for those who are
counting the calories and avoid egg, grab an Apple Oatmeal Bar.
Not something you would generally find at other restaurants, but
Watermelon has done their research well before calling themselves a
health-committed cafe!
The food, as I mentioned, is fabulous! You can savour great tastes
here, take my word for it. And the ambiance is very soothing and
definitely different from what you find elsewhere. It's tucked very
cosily in one corner of the Khan Market but it's not hard to spot.
You're sure to love their beautifully crafted spaces to sit and dine
and the menu just has fabulous options to pick from. When you do visit
Watermelon, do what I did - try something with Watermelon!
