“Self defense is the best defense.” Do you agree with this statement?
Well, if the answer is in the affirmative, you are in for a good
surprise. This article intends to enlighten you about Martial arts.
Martial arts or fighting arts are systematized practices and traditions
of training for combat. The history
of martial arts can be traced to continents like Africa, America and
Asia. The foremost objective of this art is to defend oneself or others
from physical threat. However, it is also reckoned as both a science
and an art. Religious beliefs such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism,
Confucianism or Shinto are also affiliated with martial arts.
Martial art in India is as old as 5000 years. Kalaripayattu as it is
known in South India, is a gift to the contemporary world. It is a
matter of great pride that Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest existing
martial arts in the world (if historians are to be believed).
The Indian School of Martial Arts (ISMA) that is located in Vazhuthacaud, Thiruvanathapuram,
Kerala is one martial arts school that imparts training on martial
arts. It is superbly situated in the heart of the city and was
established in 1983. The Government of India and Sports
Council recognizes ISMA as perfect training center (I am considering of
enrolling myself in martial arts course in the coming days!). It is
also a place for healing and rejuvenation (no doubt, the number of
tourists flocking the center is multiplying day by day).
In India, the inspiration behind Kalaripayattu is thought to be the raw
power and agile strength of the majestic animals’ forms – Lion, Tiger,
Elephant, Wild Boar, Crocodile and Snake. No wonder martial arts
performers are as swift as wind and as strong as tiger. The Cholas, the
Cheras and the Pandyas of the south are believed to have utilized this
art against their foes.
Today, this ancient art is alive in dance forms – both traditional and
contemporary, in theater, in fitness and in films. You will find famous
Hollywood stars like Bruce Lee (late), Jackie Chan and Jet Li performing martial arts in their movies. Want to learn some kung-fu moves?
