  • Editor’s Note of Tughlaqabad Fort, Tuglakabad

Perched on a rocky hill, Tughlaqabad Fort is a massive yet magnificent fort built by Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, the founder of the Tughlaq dynasty in the year 1324. Epitomizing the might of the Tughlaq dynasty and spread across an area of 6.5 KM, this architectural splendour was a part of the dream project of Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, when he built the capital at Tughalaqabad (the third city of Delhi). This fort was built by Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq to save his empire and subjects from the ravaging Mongols and even though it is at present in an advanced state of ruins, it speaks volumes about the glory and might of the Delhi Sultanate. In fact, the ramparts, battlements and the stupendous stonework bear testimony of the architectural skilfulness and craftsmanship of the then craftsmen and artisans. Serving the twin purposes of a defensive structure as well as the capital of Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, the Tughlaqabad Fort also houses a number of monuments within its premises that include splendid palaces, mosques and enormous audience halls. Located on the Qutub-Badarpur Road, the Tughlaqabad Fort remains open daily for visitors from 9:30 AM to 6 PM and the entry fee is Rs. 5 per individual.
