Gandharva Mahavidyalaya was started in 1939 to popularize Indian classical music and dance. With several branches all over the country, it imparts theoretical and practical training of vocal and instrumental music that includes sitar, bansuri, tabla, harmonium and violin. The institution also teaches classical dance forms, such as Kathak, Bharat Natyam and Odissi. The branch on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg in New Delhi is affiliated to Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Miraj and is guided by a music advisory board. Diploma provided on completing the tenure and clearing exam includes Sangeet Praviksha, Sangeet Madhyama, Sangeet Visharad and Sangeet Alankar. Admission to Gandharva Mahavidyalaya is open to persons of all ages, castes, creeds and religions. Male and female students are trained separately. Open on all days except Sunday and trainings starts as early as 8 AM in the morning.
