The whole central Kolkata has been holding an important position in the city’s make over since a long time. Today the area is home to renowned trade centres and commercial houses. Rail, road and subway tracks connect it with rest of the places. Specifically, the heartland’s major areas are namely Entali, Esplanade, BBD Bagh etc. The area is also where many historical buildings are located besides business houses and shopping centres, stadiums and tourist highlights. There are some streets that get a special mention here, namely Park Street, Chowringhee Road, Camac Street, Shakespeare Sarani etc.

Majorly dominated by the township of Salt Lake city, the eastern part of Kolkata has been a strategically important area of the town. The stretch of the area is a mix of localities like Baguiati, Sealdah, Tangra, Salt Lake etc. Nicely settled residential blocks dot the area which is well-connected with rest of the parts of the town. There are many attractions including the major railway station, amusement parks, railway museum, wetlands, stadium etc. It also has a good number of renowned educational institutes. Rail and road form the major means of transportation.

North Kolkata is where old Kolkata resides, in its full glory.  The charming district is dotted with closely put lanes and hundreds of old world buildings. Comprising of areas like Belgachhia, Shyambazar, Chitpur, Shobhabazar, Maniktala, Jora Sanko etc., the area acts as a major commercial as well as residential centre of the town. The area enjoys a convincing communication facility. It has railway halt stations, subway terminal and an international airport. There are many renowned educational institutes located here besides some of the famous religious attractions.

The south Kolkata is majorly a residential area consisting of townships and planned areas, some of which include Jodhpur Park, Golf Green, Baligan, Alipur, Jadavpur, Taliganja etc. less congested with a touch of modernity, the area houses many famous learning institutes, lakes, parks, clubs, stadiums etc. The attractions include National Library, Birla Industrial and Technological Museum, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Sciences, Tollygunge Golf Club, Kali Temple etc. the place has also witnessed a significant growth in the number of shopping complexes.

The Hooghly River separates the area from Howrah west. The area has been a major ground for industrial houses. Many estates and units belonging to different industries have been branching out to this area. The renowned docks and shipyard building enterprises have also been spread out of this place. Besides being a hot spot of industrial houses, it also supports a good number of population. The number of population is growing over the years. Compared to other areas of the town, the Western suburbs are a little less developed. However, rapid development works funded by different welfare organizations have improved the standard of living here.
