  • Editor’s Note of Raj Bhawan, B. B. D Bagh

The Raj Bhavan located in Kolkata is a magnificent building that takes you back to the past in the era of the British Empire. It was built in the year 1799-1803 when Marquis Wellesley was the governor general. The most striking fact about Raj Bhavan is that it was also the ancestral house of Lord Curzon, who lived here as a viceroy and the governor general. Other than just being an architectural masterpiece, it is also an example of great artistic work backed with a spectacular surrounding environment that would leave you elated. It is a three-storey building with a magnificent central area consisting of large halls that has curved corridors on all four sides radiating to detached wings, each constituting a house in itself. The first floor central area consists of throne room, banquet hall and the blue drawing and brown dining rooms. The second floor consists of the governor's apartments and the ball room. Other than this, it has a library that has around 7, 000 books and manuscripts. The general people can also visit its library and spend hours reading or making notes. This kind of architectural masterpiece is unique among all monuments, taking into consideration the period when it was constructed.
