  • Editor’s Note of The Nahargarh Fort, Amber

A picturesque fort signifying the glorious past of the pink city Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort is also known as ‘Tiger Fort’ and was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1734. Located in Jaipur, it stands on the top of Aravalis and offers a magnificent view of the city. The fort was constructed with the aim to serve as a means of supporting the security of Amer. Legend has it that the fort was named after a prince, whose spirit used to haunt the construction site. Consequently, a tantrik was called and the ghost agreed to leave the fort on the condition that the fort be named after him. A small fortress was also built at Purana Ghat in order to calm down the spirit. Madhavendra Bhawan is one of the most appealing structures in this fort that was built by Sawai Ram Singh II. It has a series of interconnected rooms. Sagar Lake in the suburbs is yet another major attraction of the Nahargarh Fort. It is designed in a geometrical way and seems enigmatic during the night when it’s illuminated well. Open for visitors from 10 AM to 5 PM, entry charges here are Rs. 15 for Indians and Rs. 20 for foreigners.
