Popularly called the twin city of Hyderabad, Secunderabad is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh, towards north of Hyderabad. Founded in the early 18th century as a British cantonment, the city was named Secunderabad after Sikandar Jah, the third Nizam of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. Geographically Hussain Sagar Lake separates the city from Hyderabad but it is considered a part of Hyderabad. Although Hyderabad and Secunderabad are known as twin cities, they have different cultures and histories for Secunderabad developed directly under British rule until 1948. Secunderabad has large army and air force presence.
