Editor’s Note of Rock Garden, Sector - 1

The Rock Garden is a beautifully landscaped and sculpted garden located at Sector 1 in Chandigarh. Spread across an area of 40 acres of land, this garden has been constructed of industrial effluents and other discarded domestic waste products, as well as the rare rocks that were collected from the Shivalik Hills and various other seasonal rivers. The Rock Garden has been built in the form of an open-air exhibition hall and houses the sculptures of people, dogs, bears, birds, elephants and other mythological and hybrid creatures made of recyclable porcelain, concrete and stone. A secretly started initiative of Nek Chand, this garden is located near Sukhna Lake. Epitomizing unique creativity, Nek Chand was even awarded with Padma Shri Award in 1983 for constructing this splendid garden. It remains open daily between 9 AM to 1 PM and again from 2 PM to 6 PM. The entry fee is Rupees 35.
