Akshardham is a place of education, entertainment and enlightenment. One can go through the most powerful experience of Indian culture through the combination of traditional stone architecture, ancient wisdom and best of modern technology. Dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan and inspired by HDH Pramukh Swami Maharaj, Akshardham is a miracle worked by the sacrifice of thousands of volunteers. The monument is built of rock and not a single inch of steel is used and according to Vastu Shastra too. The main shrine holds a seven-foot high, 1.2 ton gold-plated idol of Lord Swaminarayan in sitting posture. He is accompanied by two other idols of his disciples on both sides. Swami Gunatitanand is on his right and Swami Gopalanand on his left. 900 skilled craftsmen were employed who created 93 sculpted pillars, 40 windows carved from both sides, and a feast of forms and filigrees. To widespread the glorious past of Sanatan Dharm, light and sound shows are organized for visitors. There are a number of other worth-seeing places in the temple compound. Akshardham’s atmosphere is very calm and peaceful and is visited by hoards of people each year. Located in Gandhi Nagar, Ahmedabad, visiting hours are 9 AM to 7 PM with days being Monday to Saturday. Entry fee depends on the place to visit within the Akshardham compound.
